But the variables and algorithms these run on are designed for -- and create -- "average" job seekers for "average" jobs. It's a numbers game. But if you or someone you know has lost their job, or questioned the career path they've been on, you know it's not that simple. Job loss can be traumatic. Mid-career/life crises are real. Uncertainty can be overwhelming for job seekers. A quick list of "top match" jobs isn't the answer for most. It's much more complicated and nuanced. In every case, good career guidance is primarily concerned with the person. Some need a better understanding of jobs. All could use a better understanding of themselves. Sometimes a job isn't the answer at all. Algorithms give answers, but they may be to the wrong questions.

While society and individual behavior have changed rapidly and substantially, the practice and understanding of psychology have not kept pace. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, because good psychology depends on science and science takes time. But sometimes you just don't have time. And psychology is going to have to learn to work within the parameters of our "new normal."
