We are living in an era of extraordinary global challenge and change. The world of work is particularly affected, and us with it. In this article I make the case that "meaningful work" is now in demand, both by workers and the labor market. In the near future it will be the only type of work there is.

Technology has become a, if not 'the', major provider of career guidance. But the variables and algorithms these run on are designed for -- and create -- "average" job seekers for "average" jobs. It's a numbers game. But if you or someone you know has lost their job, or questioned the career path they've been on, you know it's not that simple. Job loss can be traumatic. Mid-career/life crises are real. Uncertainty can be overwhelming for job seekers. A quick list of "top match" jobs isn't the answer for most. It's much more complicated and nuanced. In every case, good career guidance is primarily concerned with the person. Some need a better understanding of jobs. All could use a better understanding of themselves. Sometimes a job isn't the answer at all. Algorithms give answers, but they may be to the wrong questions.

Most can identify with the feeling of discontent when others seem to be getting promoted for less apparent reason than your promotion would justify. It’s natural – we want to win and a big piece of winning in organizations is getting promoted. It probably comes as no consolation to learn that there are many factors …

Career limiting moves. Somewhat like “career derailers,” the term seems clear enough taken word for word, but it’s not as obvious as it sounds. A short reflection will help to get us on the same page. I was introduced to this term rather abruptly. Well into a meeting with a business leader whom I considered critical to …
